Carss Park is defined by its elegant curved drives and ‘pocket’ reserves that give the suburb its parklike character. Its streets are well proportioned and lined with trees - this is particularly evident in Carwar Avenue. The suburb has two distinct sections. Typically, housing in the low-lying area of Carss Park is comprised of brick bungalows. Housing in the upper areas tends to offer expansive views of the local waterways, and it’s here that more extensive redevelopment of the original housing stock has occurred.
The area is bounded by Lacey Street and Ramsgate road in the north, Kogarah Bay on the Georges river in the east, and the southernmost boundary of Todd park and the princess highway in the west.
Landmarks in the area include; Carss Park Cottage - the sandstone homestead built by William. Carss Park tidal pool, sandstone walls and bushland continue to draw visitors today with a cafe located within the grounds of the park.
A small shopping precinct is located on Carwar Avenue near the intersection with the Princess Highway. Locals can access a newsagent, pharmacy, butchery and grocery store here. South Hurstville Shopping Centre, Hurstville Central (above the railway station) and nearby Westfield are a short drive from Carss Park - they house a range of boutiques and specialty stores.
Major features of the area include Carss Bush Park, Leighton Park, Parkside Drive Reserve, Carss Park Swimming Pool, Carss Park Baths, Carss Cottage Museum. There are three schools in the area being; Baldface Public School, Blakehurst Public School, Blakehurst High School, and Mater Dei Catholic School. Also nearby is the St George institute of TAFE for tertiary education.
A bus service travels through Carwar Ave or Allawah Train Station is nearby.
